Good read if you’re like me and hate talking. I think that’s what the point of the article is…
No, seriously, reading this for me was downright incredible. I obviously am not a big fan of being pigeon-holed by certain characteristics I hold, but this thing really had a lot of my personality pegged.
i had a few problems with this article and didn’t really take it all that seriously. i think it was a nice attempt to give biological correlates of intraversion and extraversion, but they were iffy at best. i think intraversion/extraversion is more of a continuum than a classification scheme. i definitely define myself with aspects of both, depending mostly on who i am with, but i don’t think it’s a matter of shyness. however, when i got to this part:
“Conversation between an introvert and an extravert can involve a series of misunderstandings. As the introvert struggles to follow multiple conversational threads and sort out his own thoughts, he remains quiet and appears to be just listening. The extravert reads that as engagement, a cue to keep talking. The introvert struggles with the continuing flow of input and soon starts to shut out the extravert, while nodding or smiling, or even trying to stop the exchange.”
i was pretty surprised about how well they nailed it. that basically sums up most of my interactions with people that aren’t my close friends or family.
